Tatiana volunteering in Greece

Thessaloniki, Greece
10 Jan 2025 - 7 Jan 2026

Heyyy, Im Tania.

I spent one year in Thessaloniki volunteering in Balkan Hotspot. Before that I studies anthropology in Tallinn University, worked in different workplaces like newspaper, school, ngo, so I was trying to fill my life with different experiences. I love writing my diary, read, dance and laugh a lot!

Why did you decide to apply for an ESC project?

Oh, thats a big story. I started to work in a company which payed me a lot of money and I felt that I kinda liked it. But at the same time dream of travelling and living more actively felt so alive, I could escape these thoughts. And then one day I received an email from my hosting organisation that they take me but I already forgot about the fact that I applied to them. But it felt like a sign, so I quit my office job and took a plane to Greece :)

What was the application process like?

Very easy. I just sent my CV and motivation letter to Noored Ühiskonna Heaks, and then they themselves contacted me. We arranged a meeting, talked a bit, and then we started to look for a good project for me. Balkan Hotspot was one of the options, we agreed on interview with them and then they liked me!

How was your daily life as a volunteer, which kind of tasks did you have?

I was an editor and proofreader in the magazine and Balkan Hotspot blog. Apart from that we were organising a lot of events and were active in the city and with communities. It was great balance, I love it!

How did you find the local food, language and culture?

Ohhhh.... language and culture – adore! I love the chill mindset that a lot of people in Greece have. I found a lot of greek friends that I think will stay with me for life! But food.... let's be honest... not for me! But my best friend, who visited me during my project, loved it a lot. So, I guess it is very personal.

How did this experience shape your future plans?

Now I plan to stay in Greece. I found one internship there, Im also looking for a job, I learn greek. Slowly, I want to build my life there, which is very encouraging. And even if something will change, and I will not stay in Greece, this experience gave me so much bravery and internal freedom, so I know – I will find a way.

Any final thoughts or advice for others considering ESC?

I am recovered person with sever social anxiety. I started my recovery from small steps and then Erasmus+ youth exchange. It was hard but an amazing step which helped me return to work. It took me a lot of time to find this bravery again. And now, this ESC experience recovered me in a way I didnt know I can be recovered. I feel much more calm in my body and in my soul.

The only thing that was needed is bravery!
